We all start the year with big plans, big dreams, and the motivation to go after them. But somewhere along the way, life happens. The kids, the job, the mental load, the business dreams — and suddenly those plans go poof!
Sound familiar?
If you’re a mum trying to grow a business while raising a family, you’re not alone. But the secret to getting back on track (and staying there) isn’t motivation — it’s habits.
Motivation is just a myth - a belief we tell ourselves to allow us the grace NOT to do something.
‘Oh I just don' t have the motivation today so instead of building my business I'm going to watch an entire series of suits and eat my weight in chocolate’ (clearly I'm talking from experience)
But here is the thing … sometimes you just don't have the motivation, but if you want to be an entrepreneur then you have to feel the indifference and do it anyway.
And you do this by creating Habits.
Habits are the foundation of everything you do in life and business. They help you:
Create consistency
Reduce decision fatigue
Build resilience
Stay productive
Shape your identity as the confident CEO and present mum you aspire to be
So, Let’s break down how to build habits that actually stick.

Start Small
You don’t need to overhaul your life overnight. Start with the smallest manageable step you can do. Want to build a presence on social media? Commit to one post per week. Want to read more? Start with a page a day. Want to sign a client? Message one new person a day and build a relationship with them.
Before you know it, a page a day becomes a book a month, one post a week becomes 5 posts a week, and one message a day becomes one client signing up for an introduction call a day.
Research shows it takes an average of 66 repetitions to form a new habit, so little and often is the key.
Try Habit Stacking
I'm not going to take credit for this absolute game changer so this is Inspired by James Clear's Atomic Habits (I highly recommend a read), habit stacking is all about pairing a new habit with an existing one, something that is already ingrained in our subconscious.
Think:
Saying affirmations while brushing your teeth
Listening to audiobooks on the school run
Or clicking on IG and immediately posting on stories
Your brain loves patterns. So when you make one habit a cue for the new habit, it becomes easier for you to follow through.
Focus on Identity, Not Just Outcomes
If for instance, you want to make 10k months? Ask yourself: Who is the woman that earns 10k months, and what does she do daily?

Then embody that woman - The way she dresses, the things she says to herself - does she follow through on the things she says? If she says going to post content, does she?
When you shift your mindset from what you want to achieve to who you want to become, your habits align naturally with that identity.
Remember You're not just ‘working on your business’. You are becoming a successful businesswoman who leads with clarity, confidence, and purpose.
Set Yourself Implementation Intentions
I've said it before my lovely, If it's not in your calendar, it likely won’t happen.
Whether it’s taking the kids to school or an early morning business power hour – schedule it.
There have been studies done that prove however long you give yourself to complete a task - that is how long it will take you. So if you're not intentional with your time you will likely not get anything that you need to get done, done.
If you have another job you go to, try this - Early mornings are often the best time to work on your business. You’re clear-headed, focused, and your willpower hasn’t been drained yet, plus the kids are still catching ZZZ's . A few years ago I was going to work and saying I would focus on my business when I got home but after working, the dinner run and the bed and bath routine I was exhausted!
Then my coach said to me ‘Why are you using all of your brain power on someone else's business when you can wake up just a little earlier and focus on growing your business and then give them what' s left over’
If you’re spending 8+ hours building someone else’s dream – you owe it to yourself to spend the first hour of the day building yours.
Don’t Forget to Track Your Progress
This has been a massive light bulb in my business because between me and you, I'm not the most organised person in the world (shhhhh) and I had got to a point where I just wasn’t seeing any movement in my business and that was really playing havoc with my mindset. So now I track EVERYTHING
Weekly business reviews, KPI’s, Financials, Productivity, Clients, Collaborations - you name it I have a Notion page that's tracking it.

Progress leads to momentum. Tracking your wins (big or small) helps you stay motivated, especially on the days it feels like nothing is moving.
Tools like Notion, Trello and Asana are great for this (There are others but these are just the ones that I've used in the past) . Then in a years time you can look back and see how much you've managed to accomplish
Lastly Surround Yourself With the Right People
You become the average of the five people you spend the most time with. If you want to grow, align yourself with people who have the mindset, habits, and drive you admire.
If you're constantly surrounded by people that moan about money, or their job or the weather, then you will adopt the same mindset.
Now I'm NOT saying quit your job. You can join Facebook groups of likeminded people like ‘The Mum-CEO Hub: For New and aspiring Mumpreneurs', listen to podcasts by thought leaders or attend virtual events.
Just remember your environment matters.
