When it comes to building a successful business, we often focus on strategy, marketing, and sales—but what about your money mindset? If you’re a mumpreneur trying to create financial freedom, your relationship with money could be the very thing holding you back or propelling you forward.

Are your beliefs around money holding you back?

Many of us have grown up with limiting money beliefs without even realising it. Maybe you’ve told yourself things like:

  • “Money is hard to make.”

  • “Rich people are greedy.”

  • “I’m just not good with money.”

  • Or even ‘I’m Broke’

But here’s the truth: Your money mindset determines your financial reality. If you want to attract, hold, and grow wealth, you have to shift the way you think about money.

Start by Understanding Your Money Story

What beliefs about money did you grow up with, and how are they affecting my financial decisions today?

Your money story is the set of beliefs you absorbed from childhood. Think about the phrases you heard growing up:

  • “Money doesn’t grow on trees.”

  • “We can’t afford that.”

  • “Rich people are selfish.”

I used to believe money was scarce. Growing up, I saw money as a stress, a burden and something that caused arguments. So, when I started making money as an adult, I subconsciously pushed it away because it felt ‘unsafe.’

So start by journaling these questions:

  • What did your parents believe about money?

  • How did they talk about it?

  • What were the phrases around money and finances did I hear growing up that have stuck with me today

  • What is the meaning you’re giving money?

  • What is my biggest fear about having money?

  • Who made the money in your life growing up and what impact did that have on you?

  • Who do you need to forgive?

  • How is all this affecting your financial decisions today?

Recognizing your money story is the first step to rewriting it.

The Shift from Scarcity to Abundance

Many people believe money is limited, but the truth is: money is an energy—and guess what, energy flows.

What we want to do is start looking at the way we talk and think about money. Is it limiting or expensive:

Are we stuck in a scarcity mindset: “There’s never enough money.”

Or are we embracing an abundance mindset: “There are endless ways to create wealth.”

When I shifted my mindset from scarcity to abundance, I stopped focusing on what I lacked and started seeing opportunities. Instead of worrying about not having money, I asked, “How can I create more?” That’s when my business started growing.

Start catching those little sabotaging thought patterns - Whenever you catch yourself thinking, “I can’t afford this”, reframe it to: “How can I afford this?” or  “What opportunities exist for me to create more wealth?”

Your brain is designed to find solutions so give it the right questions to work with.

Now is your time to set financial goals with purpose

What specific financial goals would give you a sense of security and freedom?

It’s not enough to say I want to make more money.” You need clear, meaningful financial goals that align with your vision.

Instead of saying “I want to earn more.”

You need to be specific and clear  “I want to make £5,000 per month so I can quit my job and have more time with my family.” if you can account for every pound you get brownie points.

Once I set clear financial goals that were connected to my WHY, I became more focused, took intentional action, and started seeing results.

So, write down your next income goal and why it matters. The more emotionally connected you are to your goal, the more motivated you’ll be to achieve it.

It's time to overcome the fear of investing in yourself

Many mumpreneurs hesitate to invest in their business because they fear “wasting money.” But the truth is: investing in yourself is the fastest way to grow.

I was scared to spend money on coaching, tools, and education. But once I did, my confidence grew, my skills improved, and I started making more money. The best investment I ever made was in myself.

So, identify one area where investing could help you move forward. Maybe it’s:

  • Hiring a mentor

  • Taking a business course

  • Upgrading your systems (like getting a CRM or email marketing software)

Remember: If you treat your business like a hobby, it will pay you like one.

Ever thought about building a support system for financial success?

Your environment has a huge influence on your success. If the people around you have scarcity mindsets, it’s easy to fall into the same old patterns.

When I surrounded myself with like-minded, ambitious women, my mindset shifted. I no longer felt guilty about wanting more—I felt empowered to go after it.
